Bay of Bones
Located on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid, near the village of Peštani, the Bay of Bones is one of the most unique archaeological sites in Macedonia. Officially known as the Museum on Water, this fascinating reconstruction sits above the lake on wooden stilts, recreating a prehistoric settlement that once existed here between 1200 and 700 BC.
Although it may look like a modern attraction, the site is based on extensive underwater archaeological research, where thousands of wooden piles—resembling “bones”—were discovered on the lakebed, giving the site its unusual name. The original settlement belonged to the Bronze and Iron Age inhabitants of the region, who built their homes above water for protection and easier access to fishing, their main source of livelihood.
Today, the Bay of Bones offers visitors a rare glimpse into prehistoric life on Lake Ohrid, combining natural beauty with historical authenticity. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the platform and the dramatic mountain backdrop make it both an educational and visually striking destination.
