Krushevo
Perched high in the mountains at over 1,300 meters above sea level, Kruševo is the highest town in Macedonia and one of the most picturesque destinations in the country. Surrounded by forests and sweeping mountain landscapes, Kruševo is known for its charming architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and strong historical identity. Walking through its narrow streets, it is easy to notice beautifully preserved 19th-century houses that reflect the town’s once-thriving merchant community and multicultural heritage.
Kruševo holds a special place in the country’s history as the center of the short-lived Ilinden Uprising. This pivotal moment is commemorated by the striking Ilinden (Makedonium) Monument, a unique and futuristic structure that has become one of the most recognizable monuments in the region. The town is also the birthplace of the legendary Macedonian singer Toše Proeski, whose memorial house has become an important cultural attraction for visitors and fans from across the Balkans.
Today, Kruševo offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and outdoor adventure. Its mountain setting makes it a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and paragliding, while the fresh air and tranquil surroundings provide an ideal escape from the bustle of city life.
