Skopje

Description

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia. It is the largest city in the country and at the same time it represents an administrative-political, economic, cultural and educational-scientific center. It is located in the northern part of Macedonia, in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, divided into two parts by the river Vardar.

The earliest signs of life on the territory of present-day Skopje are found on this site dating from 4th millennium BC. Archeological research suggest that the settlement always belonged to a same culture, which progressively evolved thanks to contacts with Balkan and Danube cultures, and later with the Aegean. The locality eventually disappeared during the Iron Age when Scupi emerged.

During Roman rule Scupi first served as a military base to maintain peace in the region
