Skopje
Positioned on both sides of the Vardar River, Skopje is a city where centuries of history meet a dynamic modern atmosphere. As the capital and cultural center of Macedonia, Skopje reflects a unique blend of influences shaped by its Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Balkan heritage. The city’s historic heart lies in the lively Old Bazaar, the second largest and best-preserved bazaars in the Balkans, where cobbled streets, traditional shops and artisan workshops create an authentic glimpse into the city’s past.
Among Skopje’s most recognizable landmarks is the Stone Bridge, which has connected the two sides of the city since the Byzantine period and remains a symbolic gateway between the old and the new. Just above the Old Bazaar, rises Skopje Fortress, offering panoramic views and insight into the city’s long and layered history. Another important cultural and religious site, worth visiting is the memorial house of Mother Teresa, who was born and lived in Skopje for 18 years.
Today, Skopje is a vibrant destination where historic neighborhoods, modern squares, and scenic surroundings come together. With its lively café culture, diverse architecture, and easy access to nature - such as the beautiful Matka Canyon and Vodno Mountain - the city offers visitors a rich and varied experience.
