Ohrid Lake
Set along the border between Macedonia and Albania, Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest lakes, estimated to be over one million years old. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its exceptional natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and rich biodiversity.
The lake lies beside the historic town of Ohrid, often called the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its once numerous churches. Visitors are drawn not only by the scenery but also by the cultural and spiritual heritage that surrounds the lake.
Lake Ohrid is known for its remarkably clean and transparent water, with visibility reaching depths of up to 20 meters. Its unique ecosystem is home to over 200 endemic species, including the famous Ohrid trout, making it a paradise for nature lovers and scientists alike.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy year-round. In summer, visitors can swim, kayak, or take boat trips across the calm waters, while the surrounding mountains offer excellent hiking opportunities with panoramic views. The lakeshore is dotted with charming beaches, monasteries like Monastery of Saint Naum, and traditional villages that provide an authentic glimpse into local life.
