Mavrovo National Park
Located in western Macedonia, Mavrovo National Park is the country’s largest protected area and one of its most diverse natural landscapes. Spanning over 73,000 hectares, it is defined by dramatic mountain ranges such as Bistra, Korab, and Šar, with Golem Korab (2,764 m) standing as the highest peak in the country.
The park is rich in biodiversity, home to over 1,400 plant species and dense forests of beech, oak, and pine. Its wildlife is equally impressive, including brown bears, wolves, deer, and the rare Balkan lynx, one of Europe’s most endangered animals.
Mavrovo Lake is the park’s centerpiece, known for its iconic half-submerged church, while the crystal-clear Radika River flows through scenic gorges. In higher areas, several small glacial lakes add to the park’s alpine charm.
Visitors can enjoy hiking, skiing, wildlife watching, and exploring traditional villages like Galičnik, as well as cultural sites such as St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery.
