Shar National Park
Located in the northwestern part of Macedonia, along the border with Kosovo, Šar Mountains National Park is a vast alpine landscape known for its dramatic peaks, glacial forms, and rich biodiversity. The park stretches across the Šar mountain range, with over 30 peaks above 2,500 meters, creating one of the most impressive high-mountain environments in the Balkans.
Šar is famous for its glacial lakes, often called “mountain eyes,” scattered across high altitudes. Its flora includes alpine meadows and endemic plant species, while the fauna features chamois, bears, wolves, and the rare Balkan lynx. The region is also well known for traditional shepherd culture and the iconic Šarplaninec dog.
